In New Jersey the date is March 1. That is not the hard part.
One statewide program. One date. One system — eCRTK, electronic only; paper is not accepted. Nothing to look up, nothing to argue about.
And yet it is missed every year. Not because the date is hidden, but because nobody sends it to you, the person who knew has left, and March 1 arrives in the middle of everything else.
What a missed date costs
These figures are for New Jersey. California is a different program with different rules — see the California page. The federal figure is a statutory maximum, not a prediction of what an agency will assess. Each obligation is counted separately — the inventory, the plan and the training records are not one filing. We do not print a New Jersey state penalty figure here, because we have not verified one to our own standard. When we have it, with its source and the date we checked it, it will appear on your member pages — and it will say where it came from.
Why this is hard to do yourself
| The threshold is not one number | New Jersey screens at 500 pounds, or the federal threshold planning quantity, whichever is lower. That means the answer changes substance by substance, and the federal number is the one that catches people out. |
|---|---|
| It is electronic only | eCRTK does not accept paper. An account, a login and a working contact have to exist before March 1 — not on the day. |
| Nobody tells you it is due | The state publishes; it does not notify. One date a year, with no reminder, is the easiest kind of date to miss. |
| The person who knew has left | Compliance sits with one person. When they go, the date goes with them — and in New Jersey there is no agency letter to jog anyone's memory. |
What you get
- Your exact date — worked out from the agency that actually governs the site where your chemicals are, not from your head office address.
- Your agency — address, phone, email, and how it accepts filings.
- The fee, and who invoices you — the figure we hold for your agency, or exactly what to ask when we could not obtain it. We say which.
- Guided entry, one question per screen — each with where to look on your safety data sheet and a worked example.
- Threshold screening — the federal planning quantity for every extremely hazardous substance, and California's general rule for everything else.
- Reminders at 90 / 60 / 30 / 14 / 7 / 1 days — to your compliance contact and your CEO. One person's inbox is not a system.
- A record of what you filed, carried forward to next year.
How we know
New Jersey is one program, so the checking is different from California: instead of 104 agencies we hold one set of state rules, and we carry the federal threshold planning quantity for every extremely hazardous substance so that the “500 pounds or the federal number, whichever is lower” test can actually be applied to your inventory. Every figure on the member pages carries its source and the date we checked it. Where we could not verify something, we say so and tell you what to ask — we do not fill the gap with a guess. The penalty figure above is an example: we left it out rather than print a number we had not checked ourselves.
